Towbars: What is the difference between single & twin electrics?
Fitting a quality towbar will allow you to tow your trailer, caravan, or vehicle with ease. Knowing what you require your towbar for will be useful when it comes to having your equipment fitted, enabling our expert team to ascertain what type of towbar and electrics will be best suited to your needs.
When you have a towbar fitted, you will need to decide what type of electrics you will have wired. It’s important to choose the appropriate socket for your requirements, and much of this hinges on what you are going to be towing.

What is the difference?
Single – With single electrics, your car is wired so that it will only power the lights of your caravan. This is the minimum legal requirement when towing vehicles or trailers.
Twin – Twin electrics use two 7 pin sockets, and wire your car to power the towed vehicle/caravan road lights, reverse lights, and any interior electrics in the caravan such as the fridge and leisure battery.
13 pin socket – All caravans that are manufactured in the UK since 2008 are now fitted with 13 pin connectors, which are essentially twin electrics merged into one socket. Commonly seen in European countries, 13 pin socket electrics are for use with newer caravan models.
Why is it important?
Choosing the correct electrics for your towbar can make the difference between a functioning caravan – and one with no power on the inside! Single electrics are ideal for towing just a trailer, as you will not require power for the interior, and will still be fulfilling the legal regulations regarding towing.
However, if you require the interior functions of the caravan you are towing to be powered, twin electrics are essential.
